When master carver Colin Mantripp, aged 63, bought a box of stained glass for 300 pounds at auction in England, he was hoping to use the material to create colourful windows in his handcrafted doors. However, when he collected the box he was amazed at the contents: over 130kg of Victorian stained glass.
Curious about its origin, the man researched the words “St Mary’s”, written on some of the glass and came across the history of St. Mary’s church in Sheffield, where the stained glass had been removed during the Second World War to protect it from Nazi bombers.
The glass had first been stored beneath the church but it disappeared after a bomb destroyed the building. The master carver contacted the church to return the stained glass but his offer was turned down for the church already had new stained glass windows which symbolise the times today.

Primeiro, o material ficou guardado no subsolo da igreja, porém desapareceu após um bombardeio que deixou o edifício em ruínas durante anos. O entalhador entrou em contato com a igreja para devolver os vitrais, porém sua oferta foi recusada, com a alegação de que a igreja tem novos vitrais que simbolizam os dias atuais.
