A remarkable Roman mosaic of almost 80m² was discovered by the son of a farmer in Rutland, England, whilst he was walking through the wheat field.
Local authorities were informed of the presence of “unusual pottery” which, according to the archaeologists called to the scene, is the dining or entertainment area of a large Roman villa occupied between the 3 rd and 4 th century BC.

In a statement to the press, Duncan Wilson, chief executive of Historic England, added that discoveries like this were “important in helping us piece together our shared history”.
The mosaics portray the story of Achilles in the Trojan War and are a rare find in Europe and up to now, unique in England.

Um notável mosaico romano com quase 80m² foi descoberto pelo filho do proprietário de uma quinta em Rutland, na Inglaterra, enquanto esse circulava pela plantação de trigo.
As autoridades locais foram comunicadas da presença de uma “cerâmica incomum” que, conforme os arqueólogos responsáveis, trata-se de uma sala de estar ou de jantar de uma grande vila ocupada entre os séculos III e IV d.C.
“Descobertas como essa são muito importantes para nos ajudar a reconstituir nossa história compartilhada, disse Duncan Wilson, executivo-chefe da Historic England, no comunicado à imprensa.
Os mosaicos, que retratam a história de Aquiles na Guerra de Troia, são raros na Europa e, até o momento, únicos na Inglaterra.
