Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the President of the Republic of Portugal will begin his new term on March 9, with ceremonies to be held in Parliament, in Lisbon, and at the headquarters of the Municipality of Oporto, where he will gather representatives of all religions. The President of all Portuguese has a deep friendship for everyone - regardless of creeds and cultures - and a desire to build a more just and tolerant society.
In attendance at the Municipality of Oporto ceremony will be D. Manuel Linda, Dias Ben Zion and Abdul Manga, respectively the Bishop of the Catholic Church and the presidents of the Jewish and Muslim communities of the city, who have developed an extraordinary cooperation over the last few years. Bishop Manuel Linda once said that “Oporto is a unique case”.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who is a Catholic, visited the Oporto synagogue in 2019, participating in a Shabbat reception (kabbalat Shabbat) ceremony, presided over by the Chief Rabbi of Porto, Daniel Litvak.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, o Presidente da República de Portugal, iniciará o seu novo mandato no dia 9 de março, com cerimónias no Parlamento, em Lisboa, e na sede do Município do Porto, onde juntará representantes de todas as religiões. O Presidente de todos os portugueses tem uma profunda amizade por todos – independentemente de credos e culturas – para erguer uma sociedade mais justa e tolerante.
No Município do Porto estarão presentes D. Manuel Linda, Dias Ben Zion e Abdul Manga, respectivamente o Bispo da Igreja Católica e os presidentes das comunidades judaica e muçulmana da cidade, os quais têm desenvolvido uma extraordinária cooperação ao longo dos últimos anos. O Bispo D. Manuel Linda disse uma vez que “o Porto é um caso único”.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa é católico e visitou a sinagoga do Porto no ano de 2019, participando numa cerimónia de recepção do Shabbat, presidida pelo Chefe-Rabino do Porto, Daniel Litvak.
