The story of Melissa and Caterina would make a movie. Both were born fifteen minutes apart in an Italian hospital, on the night of 31 December. When the time came to leave the hospital, the mothers wondered why their daughters were not wearing the clothes they had brought, but the nursing team assured them there had been a mistake in dressing them.
However, there had been no mistake with the clothes, the girls had been exchanged. The confusion was only discovered three years later, when Caterina’s mother went to pick her up from school and saw another girl who looked very like her two elder daughters. When she recognised the other mother as having been with her in the maternity ward, she remembered the mistake with the clothes.
A DNA exam proved what the families were fearing. However, instead of exchanging their daughters, they decided to raise them together, as if the mothers were best friends. The result?
“The girls grew up with four parents and eight grandparents. Today, they are more like twins than sisters and there is a kind of love which binds the two families”, says Mauro Caporiccio, author of the book which tells this story.

A história de Melissa e de Caterina poderia ser trama de filme. As duas nasceram na noite de 31 de dezembro de 1998, com 15 minutos de intervalo, em um hospital italiano. Na hora da alta, as mães questionaram o motivo de as meninas serem entregues com roupas diferentes das que trouxeram, mas a equipe garantiu que houve um engano com as vestimentas.
Na verdade, não eram as roupas que estavam trocadas, mas as meninas. A confusão só foi descoberta três anos depois, quando a mãe de Caterina foi buscá-la na escola e percebeu que uma outra criança era muito parecida com suas duas filhas mais velhas. Ao reconhecer a mãe da menina como sua companheira de quarto na maternidade, lembrou-se da confusão das roupas.
Um exame de DNA comprovou o que as famílias temiam. Mas, ao invés de destrocar as filhas, decidiram criá-las juntas, como se as mães fossem grandes amigas. O resultado?
“As meninas efetivamente cresceram com quatro pais e oito avós. Hoje elas são mais gêmeas do que irmãs e existe um tipo de amor que une as duas famílias”, conta Mauro Caporiccio, autor do livro que conta essa história.
