Starting 8 Sept 2023, the Jewish Museum Berlin will be showing the first-ever large-scale exhibition on Jewish experiences in the GDR (German Democratic Republic). With a focus on cultural history and using documentary research, the show journeys into a little examined part of German-Jewish history, bringing together visual art, film and literature, as well as multifaceted biographies and exceptional exhibits.
It uses an actor-centric perspective to explore Jewish experiences in East Germany through and beyond the post-reunification era to the present. Contemporary witnesses and their personal stories are at the heart of the show. What motivated Jews to return to the German Democratic Republic? What did it mean to be Jewish in the German Democratic Republic? What kind of relationship did Jews have to state control?
In the aftermath of the Shoah, many Jews were united by a shared desire: To build an anti-fascist state in the German Democratic Republic – “a new country,” as some of them put it in interviews. They fled Germany from the Nazis, returning after 1945 to the Soviet zone of occupation. They survived concentration camps or time in hiding. In the exhibition they speak of their experiences in exile, their survival and their remigration.
An expansive program accompanies the show and includes everything from a concert by the band Stern-Combo Meißen to an expert conference entitled “...and turning towards the future? – On Jewish history and stories in the German Democratic Republic.” The exhibition itself also serves as an event location: on Tuesday afternoons, readings, discussions, film screenings and talks with contemporary witnesses will be held in a personal setting.

Exposição na Alemanha apresenta parte pouco examinada da história judaico-alemã
A partir de 8 de setembro de 2023, o Museu Judaico de Berlim exibirá a primeira exposição em grande escala sobre as experiências judaicas na RDA (República Democrática Alemã). Com foco na história cultural e utilizando pesquisa documental, a mostra viaja por uma parte pouco examinada da história judaico-alemã, reunindo artes visuais, cinema e literatura, além de biografias multifacetadas e exposições excepcionais.
A exposição usa uma perspectiva centrada no ator para explorar as experiências judaicas na Alemanha Oriental através e além da era pós-reunificação até o presente. Testemunhas contemporâneas e suas histórias pessoais estão no centro. O que motivou os judeus a retornarem à República Democrática Alemã? O que significava ser judeu na República Democrática Alemã? Que tipo de relacionamento os judeus tinham com o controle do estado?
No rescaldo da Shoah, muitos judeus estavam unidos por um desejo comum: construir um estado antifascista na República Democrática Alemã – “um novo país”, como alguns deles disseram em entrevistas. Eles fugiram da Alemanha dos nazistas, retornando depois de 1945 para a zona de ocupação soviética. Eles sobreviveram aos campos de concentração ou ao tempo na clandestinidade. Na exposição falam das suas experiências no exílio, da sua sobrevivência e da sua remigração.
Um extenso programa acompanha o show e inclui desde um concerto da banda Stern-Combo Meißen até uma conferência de especialistas intitulada “...e voltando-se para o futuro? – Sobre a história judaica e histórias na República Democrática Alemã.” A própria exposição também serve como local de eventos: nas tardes de terça-feira, serão realizadas leituras, debates, exibições de filmes e conversas com testemunhas contemporâneas em ambiente pessoal.
