One of the principal memories that former soldier Martin Adler, aged 97, has of his time in World War Two was the moment when he almost shot three Italian children while he was looking for German soldiers in a region south of Bologna.
He and another soldier were pointing their weapons at something that looked like a cart, when they were interrupted by a woman desperately crying “Children, children, children”. It was a cradle covered in wicker that protected her three children - Bruno, Mafalda and Giuliana, now aged 79, 82 and 83 years old.
The soldiers lowered their guns and smiled in relief for a photograph that Adler kept as a real trophy of war. The episode was engraved on this veteran’s mind for over seven decades and he travelled from the United States to Italy to finally meet the siblings, who live not far from the house where they were found in 1944.

Ele e outro soldado apontavam suas armas para um objeto semelhante a uma caçamba quando foram interrompidos por uma mulher desesperada que gritava “crianças, crianças, crianças”. Tratava-se de um berço coberto com vime que protegia seus três filhos - Bruno, Mafalda e Giuliana, hoje com 79, 82 e 83 anos.
Os soldados baixaram as armas e sorriram aliviados para uma fotografia, que Adler guardou como um verdadeiro troféu de guerra. O episódio ficou gravado na memória do veterano por mais de sete décadas, quando viajou dos Estados Unidos para a Itália para finalmente reencontrar os irmãos, que moram a poucos quilômetros da casa onde estavam em 1944.
