In a video broadcast by the Israeli Embassy in Portugal, the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo Sousa, lit the "Chanukkah" candles with the Israeli Ambassador, Dor Shapira, and addressed his greetings to the Portuguese Jewish community and the Portuguese who reside in Israel.
"Chanukkah" is a Jewish festival known as the "Festival of Lights" and celebrates an event that took place over 2200 years ago, during the Hellenistic period: the reconquest of the Temple of Jerusalem by a small Jewish army from the Greek Empire.
Washington-based human rights organization B'nai B'rith International welcomed Rebelo de Sousa's attitude: "We are heartened by this warm show of solidarity with the Jewish and Israeli communities."
This year 2021, "Chanukkah" started on Sunday, November 28th and ends on Monday, December 6th.

Num vídeo difundido pela embaixada de Israel em Portugal, o Presidente da República, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, acendeu as velas de "Chanucá" com o Embaixador de Israel, Dor Shapira, e endereçou os cumprimentos à comunidade judaica portuguesa e aos portugueses que residem em Israel.
"Chanuká" é uma festa judaica conhecida como o "Festival das luzes" e celebra um evento ocorrido há mais de 2200 anos, aquando do período helenístico: a reconquista do Templo de Jerusalém por parte de um pequeno exército judaico sobre o Império grego.
A B'nai B'rith International, organização de direitos humanos com sede em Washington, saudou a atitude de Rebelo de Sousa: "Estamos animados com esta calorosa demonstração de solidariedade com as comunidades judaica e israelita".
Este ano, "Chanucá" iniciou-se no passado domingo dia 28 de novembro e termina na segunda-feira dia 6 de dezembro.
