Young Begoña M. Rueda, aged 29, works in a hospital in Cadiz, Spain, washing the clothes and sheets of hundreds of patients. Although having no contact with such people, she imagines the story behind the items she is washing.
You never get to know anything about the people who have worn the garments; whether they are living or dead. It could have been a loved one. It gives you a lot of food for thought, especially the children’s clothes,” she said.
Her work drove Rueda to write the book Servicio de Lavandería, or Laundry Service, which won her the poetry prize from the Spanish publisher Hiperión. In her work, the author speaks of little-known parts of the hospital and the invisible workers there.

A jovem Begoña M. Rueda, de 29 anos, trabalha em um hospital de Cádiz, na Espanha, lavando roupas e lençóis de centenas de pacientes. Apesar de não ter contato com essas pessoas, ela imagina a história que há por trás das peças que higieniza.
“Nunca sabemos nada das pessoas que usaram essas roupas, se morreram ou estão vivas. Poderia ter sido algum ente querido. Tudo isso nos dá muito o que pensar, sobretudo a roupa das crianças”, conta.
O trabalho incentivou Rueda a escrever o livro Servicio de Lavandería, que venceu um prêmio de poesia da editora espanhola Hiperión. Na obra, a autora aborda os lugares pouco visitados do hospital e os profissionais invisíveis que lá estão.
